V & T Law - Personnel Required to Use Seat-belts in Emergency Vehicles

posted Nov 25, 2015, 7:40 AM by Andrew Steel
Governor Andrew Cuomo on 11/20/15 signed into law a bill amending NYS Motor Vehicle & Traffic Law section 1229 and taking effect immediately that requires all firefighters and EMS personnel to wear seat-belts while operating volunteer fire and/or ambulance vehicles.

There is an exception for emergency medical personnel providing patient care in the rear compartment of an ambulance in accordance with applicable patient care standards, guidelines and protocols pursuant to Article 30 of the Public Health Law.

Penalty for violating the provisions of the section shall be a civil fine of up to fifty dollars.

This legislation was sponsored by State Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan and Assembly member Fred Thiele, and closes a loophole that previously exempted first responders from having to wear seat-belts.
